SDCC Coverage sponsored by Mad Cave The other day I wrote a visual essay about the Fantastic for First Step Promotional Art Campaign. Well, now, the little bit about this art comes from artist Chris Weston. Chris Weston points out that he is promoting it based on a cover of the film “Fantastic Four: First Family.” It was soon enough for Johnny to place the rabbit ear behind the lead. Here’s a full cover rendered with Weston’s signature high contrast details. I love the recommendation! In a later post, Weston declared that this was far from a small…
Enchanting unicorn horns, pirate shrimp, dangerous mega sea creatures, and Kinenop and friends embark on an adventure on a rainbow island, waiting for the unicorn to prove truly realistic with the third hilarious volume of comic duo Kaylacombes and HF Brownfield! It’s Kinelope’s favorite day: Rainbow Day! Everyone in Pleasant Town celebrates everything in multicolor, including the Technicolor parade. However, Quinnelope’s Prism Party plans to stop Screeneeeeeeech when Unicorns say it’s not the real thing. oh dear! It’s a rainbow day! (A “The Catastrophe of the Imagination” as Kinenop says.) Devastated by this discovery, Kinenop has joined her friend Star…
TBDNeedless to say, Marvel loves to celebrate their anniversary. A proper case, today’s publisher has announced its return to the planet Hulk Special One Shot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the inventive planet Hulk Storyline available in October. Leading this issue is none other than the original storyline creative team, author Greg Pak and acclaimed artist Carlos Paglayan. Readers of the current Imperial Event series are well aware that Sakaar, the planet’s hulk, plays a pivotal role. According to a press release, the one-shot touches on the current event. The planet Hulk sees the Hulk collide with a strange alien…
TBDNow that digital comics are established, I am interested in comics that I cannot digitize myself. The following paper works use physical objects in a unique way, primarily in how they unfold. All of these were discovered at TCAF last month. The birth of Linda and his death by Tess Eneri Reed are two of three Estonian stories that “transform into a mural of your hands,” as Reed explains. They are spoken in silent, calm colors and expanded in an accordion-like way. It’s fun to fold, unfold, and play with. The ballad of bugs by Meggie Ramm is built in…
TBDA few quiet years later, British publisher Jonathan Cape took over the top floor of Foles’ flagship bookstore in London on June 21, presenting a special day with Allison Beckdel showing off their latest graphic novel and its author. Allison Beckdel’s headline talk sold out completely, and Stragglers must stand up – Photo credit: Dean Simons Jonathan Cape is a staple of the British graphic novel scene. The eclectic literary publisher led the way to variations in British form by first publishing Home Glow talent, while introducing internationally approved jobs to build a highly successful line in the UK. Known…
TBDSince starting to report on digital comics for Beat over the past few weeks, I’ve learned one thing: GlobalComix Rocks. Last week they announced they would add an entire IDW library (it’s open today!), and for the week before that, Archie Comics was hoping on. Add it to an already stacked lineup featuring DC comics, vaults and dark horses and there are over 100,000 comics in one place. True Industry First is now available on GlobalComix the day a new release of IDW Publishing hits comic bookstores. This is the first time that a major American publisher has provided digital…
To celebrate 20 years since Planet Hulk first hit the shelves, Marvel reunites original creative teams Greg Pak and Artist Carlo Pagulayan, returning to Planet Hulk, the latest storyline during the original epic event. First published in 2005, Planet Hulk told the story of the crash fall of the green Goliath in Sakaar’s alien world, where he was promoted from gladiator to king. It was widely regarded as one of Hulk’s biggest storylines, and it had a lasting impact on Marvel Lore and influenced inspirational adaptations across other media. Now readers can revisit that cruel and emotional story with a…

TBDWell, it’s been six months since X-Manhunt. That is, it’s time for another crossover with the X-Books. Welcome to the age of revelation this October when the publisher was teased last week. The current era of X-Men books exists with nods to the story throughout the title’s over 60 years of history. This time, we will properly experience the 30th anniversary of the event and experience a riff on the popular apocalypse storyline. That famous story is that Charles Xavier passed away young and the X-Men book resumed in another timeline in which the villain’s apocalypse ruled the earth. Each…
