In 1989, author Rick Veitch wrote an issue of Swamp Thing in which the title character was present at the crucifixion of Jesus, but management at the time decided not to publish it. Mr. Veitch wrote the book and the project was never completed until now.
At Thursday’s DC Vertigo panel at New York Comic Con, the publisher announced that the story will conclude with a four-issue series called Swamp Thing 1989. Swamp Thing issue #88 will be published as originally scheduled, with artist Tom Mandrake and colorist Trish Mulvihill working with Veitch on the next three issues.
The series will launch in April 2026, with all four issues featuring period trade dress and (possibly) advertising.
“We could put these in a long box as if this series wasn’t over yet,” said DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Chris Conroy, who presented during the panel discussion.
And while the announcement was made at the DC Vertigo panel, Swamp Thing 1989 will be published as part of the DC Black Label.
