It has been announced that Chris Evans will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Six years after he last stepped down as Captain America in 2019, Evans will be returning for another Avengers series, but this time in a less specific role.
After his cameo in Wolverine and Deadpool, Marvel seems to have no qualms about bringing back original cast members from throughout its history, including bringing back Hugh Jackman to play Wolverine. Personally, although no one talks about it, I actually think all of this is more “intentional” than people think (and benefits the MCU quite a bit), The Brothers, perhaps the best filmmakers to come out of the MCU, will also be returning to finish the series, especially now that Robert Downey Jr. is returning as Doctor Doom and Russo.
The reason I emphasize this is simple. Secret Wars has always been about the battle for the Marvel championship, and every character who’s appeared in a Marvel movie or TV series (or even a video game) over the past 25 years makes a cameo in this inevitable pairing. It means that you will be blessed with a chance to perform. -Movie up. This is part of the world-building that made Into the Spider-Verse so interesting, but how the MCU is able to pull this off is really up to the creative team.
It’s really built into the narrative structure of Secret Wars, so it’s really exciting to see people like Tobey Maguire, Westley Snipes, and in this case Chris Evans return to the MCU. No surprise. Especially given the nature of this Tournament of Champions, almost everyone will be participating. I stress this because don’t be surprised to see leaked announcements of other cameos as the date approaches. Personally, I hope this is a final bow to all of these characters. Because we’ve been watching them on screen for almost half my life.
Now, I can report on MCU fatigue and superhero movie fatigue, but as I’ve talked about at length, these movies still account for over a quarter of all movie box office receipts. That would be a lie because the data shows it time and time again. Trilogy at the beginning of the year. Of course, DC is launching its own movie universe with James Gunn, and so far it’s been working out perfectly between hits like The Penguin and Creature Commandos, and the reverse click Despite the baiting headlines, Marvel is doing well. It’s just hitting a wall of growth like everything else. Big companies do that at some point.
And while this kind of film is expensive to make, important questions remain. Does cost matter if your genre accounts for the majority of movie revenues? That’s something most reporters ignore.
Because in the context of the rest of the entertainment industry, game consoles like the PlayStation and X-Box are sold at a loss every year, but we keep buying them as the industry grows. Streaming services like Netflix are growing their user bases, but they almost always operate in debt. Would a company like Disney care that a movie loses money if the latest theme park ride built on the same property as the movie generates a passive revenue stream for the next 15 years?
Entertainment is now vertically integrated at its best. So, Chris Evans, you can keep coming back to everything forever. Personally, I’m looking forward to your return to the role in Not Another-Another Teen Movie Part 2.
