There are no pictures or stories in the slightly dark world in which “A Canary Named Star” is set. A woman named Chell suffers a painful loss and, worse, is held responsible for this tragic incident. Years later, Chell decides to tell her side of the story, but her past comes back to haunt her.
This is a surprisingly moving and emotional story that weaves beautifully told and brightly colored mythology into the more subdued style of Chell’s overall story. RH Stewart provides some really great artwork, both in the more colorful fantasy sequences and the darker scenes within the “real world.”
This piece is beautifully written by creator Travis Corwin and touches on so many exciting themes. The healing and transformative nature of the story is at the forefront throughout the story, including the ability of fantasy to help survive even the most dire of circumstances.
Although there are some seemingly hopeless situations for Chell, it is ultimately an optimistic and hopeful story that firmly believes in the healing and coping mechanisms of imagination as well as the redemptive nature of stories. .
This is a great read and a thought-provoking work of art. Readers are rewarded for going on a difficult journey with Chell, even though some sequences are difficult to get through due to the various tragedies and hardships she endures.
Notably, prog-rock band Antinode has recorded a concept album, also titled The Canary That Named The Stars, which serves as a sister effort that further explores the themes of the story.
The Canary That Named The Stars is available for purchase from Neverwas Comic. Thanks to Travis Corwin for sending me a copy of the graphic novel for review purposes.
