Reading this second issue of Malibu Comics’ short-lived 1993 Street Fighter series, it’s easy to see why Capcom was unhappy with the publisher’s approach to stories and characters.
We see an almost troublingly long fight between Sagat and Ken here, and look, I know this is the extreme, violent 90s, but Street Fighter can’t be called Mortal Kombat. It’s a shame that no one told the creators that. This is an ultra-violent action sequence with a truly shocking and somewhat brutal climax. To avoid spoilers (yes, I know this is a 30+ year old comic, but I’m still conscious of this kind of thing), stop reading now.
Spoiler
In an incredibly bold, or perhaps very, very stupid move, writer Len Straszewski appears to have killed off one of the main characters of the Street Fighter story in this issue. Yes, just two issues into the series, Ken is brutally murdered and, to add insult to injury, his scalp is torn off. While we don’t see any bodies at any point (leaving the door wide open for a shocking revival of the patented comic book), what the series takes on at this stage is still jaw-dropping. It’s a strange curveball.
end spoiler
So it’s clear that the creators don’t really understand the Street Fighter game or its characters. The artwork has its moments, but overall it’s not great (although the color work is once again very good; Malibu Comics really utilized early computer coloring throughout the line) But it’s great).
So where does the series go from here? Find out in the third (and final!) issue…
