So this is where the four-issue adaptation of the 1981 Atari classic ends, and things end in an incredibly strange way.
I have to hand it to writer Max Bemis and artist Eoin Mallon. Having handed over the keys to Atari’s aging series, they could very easily push out a lazy sci-fi action comic that simply uses an arcade game premise to give readers a shooter-style story. It should have been.
But instead, they’ve crafted a surprisingly moving story with some truly trippy and outlandish sequences, an astonishing layering of totally bizarre twists and visuals.
In this fourth issue, the expected developments are twisted and shaped into something entirely different, and we even find ourselves feeling genuine sympathy for Centipede himself.
That’s really amazing. Who would have thought that a blocky, almost abstract, single-screen shooter from the early 80’s could offer such rich and emotionally moving storytelling?
It was a wonderful surprise and quite an eventful journey. It’s definitely worth reading, whether you’re familiar with the source material or not (and if you are, this game has some very clever visual elements that will help you see it from a different perspective). It generated a lot of cash that you might have expected.
You can purchase the entire series of Centipede Vol 1 from Amazon.
