A quick look at the contents of Thunderbolts: Saga of Yelena Belova will tell you everything you know about Yelena’s place in the Marvel universe. Yelena Belova’s Saga, composed of Russian-centric team-up and issues with her big “sisters” solo book, shows the history of the character, which is mostly used as a supportive character.
Her first appearance was in the Nonhuman Stomach, but she achieved her first focus with Black Widow (1999) and her follow-up, Black Widow (2001).
Amazing
These stories do not show why she is always cast as the second fiddle. Each of the 15 issues collected here presents her as a capable and persuasive personality. Introducing as the second black widow, Yelena was meant to be the perfect foil for Romanova. Also an alumni of the Ominous Red Room, she was presented as a kind of new model of the post that was vacated by Turncoat Avenger. She never proves that her sister is better, but even a little naive, she is always calm, confident and deadly.
The first two Black Widow Miniseries by authors Devin Grayson and Greg Racka have little control over them except that JG Jones and Scott Hampton provide pencils and showcase and perform the characters. They were early Marvel Knights offerings, and excuses to play with more mature (read: narratively dark) themes in imprint efforts to provide space for more serious stories. They’re not a great story. They are clearly told to wrinkled characters and provide confused motivation. Still, they introduced characters with great potential.

That possibility was largely wasted until her introduction into the MCU. Yelena Belova’s saga doesn’t present a chronology of her limited exploits, but it’s not too far from it. Until the lead-up to the 2021 Black Widow film, she only appeared in 30 issues in 20 years (most of which are in support of the Secret Warrior). Putting the character in the literal spotlight of the film has significantly increased her use in the comics.
She plays a central role in the 2021 Winter Guard series, but she is used as the foil for the well-known team she shares with the Red Guardian. The book is more interested in character development than any level of character development due to the hard drive of the Guardian MacGuffin, and these characters all make a lot of overstated behavior (including political plots from Dracula), but that’s another clear case where Veroba is used conditionally and not important.
Finally, in the issue of the 2020 Black Widow Volume, as one of the Romanova teams, voyeurs are allowed to be restricted in Velova but developed in characters. In that series, the characters develop more sisterly relationships, and their jokes make Velova more real (though these moments between them are short).

Like most Marvel sagas. . . The book, Thunderbolts: Yelena Belova’s saga is a sampler of characters, not chronicles. It has accumulated snippets and spotlights, and supports the likelihood of sharing a character who spurred into the spotlight with her Thunderbolt peers, ignoring inclusion like Belloba’s own White Widow series a few years ago. I hope that her role in the MCU will focus more on her in the comics, but it seems likely that she will become the character she will ever support, but it may be bold and promising.
