If you’re looking for a new controller, you’re in luck. Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 Core controller sells for $130 to $98 at Amazon and Target. That means you’re about $3 off the lowest price ever, and a great chance to upgrade to something a little better.
We previously recommended the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller, primarily based on its ability to offer the best features of the $180 Xbox Elite Series 2 controller at a more affordable price. This includes fit and finish such as rubberized grips and sturdier, longer-lasting versions of traditional controller triggers, joysticks, and D-pads (which are now circular). On top of that, the battery life is up to 40 hours.

The Elite Series 2 Core also lets you adjust joystick and trigger tension to your liking, and remap the controller’s buttons in the Xbox Accessories app. This can be useful if you have a specific setup you prefer in Call of Duty: Warzone rather than a more relaxing game like Viva Piñata, or if you’re sharing your controller with someone else.
The main downside to the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller, aside from limited color options when purchased outside of Xbox Design Labs, is the lack of accessories. The regular Xbox Elite Series 2 controller price includes a variety of joysticks, D-pads, and back paddles that you can attach if you want to try out a new setup. These are not included in the Core controller at all. In fact, the back of the controller has an annoying indentation where the paddles should be attached.
This is a minor annoyance in the grand scheme of things and can be fixed by purchasing accessories in the future when you actually need it. Even without the paddles, the experience of using the Xbox Elite Series 2 Core controller should be significantly improved. That’s important anyway if you’re trying to progress through a very long RPG.
