Marvel Comics has announced a new ongoing series, X-Men United, written by Eve Ewing (The Unexceptional X-Men) with art by Tiago Palma (The New Avengers). The series, which launches in March as part of the post-Age of Revelation storyline Shadows of Tomorrow, will see Emma Frost founding Gray Matter Lane, a new school and community center for mutants, staffed by Wolverine, Magneto, Beast, Rogue, Storm and more. But “not all of the X-Men are ready for the idea of a separate mutant educational institution for higher education”…

“Build a school,” Charles Xavier told them, and the X-Men did just that. But it happened in a way no one expected. Welcome to Gray Matter Lane. This is a place where mutants from around the world can unite and teach each other the skills they need to survive. Featuring the greatest X-Men as teachers and a campus unlike anything you’ve ever seen, it’s a crossroads in the X-Universe, where a student body from around the world works to guide the mutant species to its next evolutionary step and deal with a creeping threat to all of them.
Editor Tom Brevoort wrote: “Gray Matter Lane is where all the major players in the X universe come together to fight, bond and air their differences. There’s action, drama, faces old and new, and danger galore. Who are the young mutants? And what secrets will they uncover in Sinister’s lab? And how far will they grow? Will Cyclops come to destroy all plans? ”
Ewing says, “Working on the X-Team these past few years has been the most fun I’ve ever had writing comics. The idea for ‘Gray Matter Lane’ was a collective idea of a lot of writers brainstorming in a room, and it’s really cool because the mental space allows us to make things even weirder and more surreal, while also building that classic Xavier-school energy that we’ve all loved for decades.”
Palma added, “Unreal! That’s how I can sum up how I feel working on this new chapter of the X-Men. And what an honor it was to have the opportunity to design the new Gray Matter Lane campus. I loved the freedom to really experiment with different shapes and really crazy ideas for the group’s iconic space.”
X-Men United #1 will be released on March 11th with an interlocking cover featuring art created by Stefano Caselli in collaboration with the announcement of Shadow of Tomorrow at New York Comic Con. Meanwhile, “Age of Revelation” will end with a special on December 31st, and “Shadows” will begin the following week with “X-Men” #23 and “Wolverine” #14.
