Wyatt Kennedy’s story, murder drones and pressure to work with IP

If you were on the indie animation side of the internet (I lived in for nearly 20 years), the murder drone doesn’t require referrals, and there’s no animation studio glitch production either. The Australian animation studio, when it comes to their projects, is the amazing digital circus and the upcoming Order of Gaslight District and Dana Terrace, the first of the first show where murderous drones were a huge success.

With all that in mind, it wasn’t surprising that ONI Press’s graphic novel adaptation, which reached one of Glitch’s IPS, had over 5,000 sign-ups on the Kickstarter Pre-Launch Page. It’s a lot of fans and a lot of pressure to make it better. That’s why we spoke to writer Wyatt Kennedy (Night, Bolero, Marvel United: Pride Special) about his experience adapting this story.

Eb Hutchins: What do you write about murder drones?

Wyatt Kennedy: Oni reached out to me, came out of the blue and thought they were fans of my previous works and were suitable to adapt MD. I have never actually dealt with anyone’s IP except for a few projects for Marvel, so I was mostly interested in working on adaptation, mainly as a learning technique.

Hutchins: What topics are you interested in? Which character arcs are you most excited about adapting?

Kennedy: In projects like this, the glitch was as specific as possible, closely matched to the source material, so that in fact all the original comedies and character beats are completely unharmed. I think we’re even more excited to see how the show is visually translated, as our artist Jo (Mi-Gyeong) is just astounding.

Hutchins: Murder drones are a huge asset with a beloved fanbase. What would you tell fans of this series to be excited about your adaptation?

Kennedy: For those who love physical media, that means that those who actually own the stories they love are told with a lot of attention and respect in the source material. I think it’s also a great path to open doors for more stories and exploration in this universe in the future.

Hutchins: Murder drone is funded through Kickstarter. Are there any stretching goals you’re excited to reveal or meet up with?

Kennedy: I’m not really involved in that aspect, haha! Whatever the Oni and Glitch line up, I’m sure newcomers will definitely seduce them if they hopefully do with their stubborn fans.

Hutchins: After the murder drone, are there any future and/or current projects you are working on?

Kennedy: Knight, my ongoing series with image comics returns on October 29th with issue 16 and looks forward to being announced soon. Wiccan: The first series with Witches Road and Marvel will be released on December 5th.

Hutchins: Finally, where can people find you?

Kennedy: You can follow me on @thelavenderlemons’ Instagram
