Wonder Man to star in new comic after show ends

Marvel Comics has announced that Simon Williams/Wonder Man will star in a new comic book series this March, written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Mark Buckingham. Simply titled “Wonder Man,” this five-issue comic follows Simon as he protects Los Angeles and continues to pursue his acting career. But when a mystery about a friend from his nefarious past comes to light, Simon finds himself not only on the wrong side of Hollywood, but also fellow hero Patsy Walker/Hellcat.

Lights, camera, superhero action! Simon Williams had his ups and downs, from becoming one of the Avengers’ brightest stars until he was manipulated into villainy by Enchantress. But just like in Hollywood, no matter how low he gets, Simon keeps fighting the good fight. But what happens when the past finally catches up with him? Prime Minister Randolph, Simon’s former cellmate, appears! A true love letter to LA and the history of Wonder Man!

Director Duggan said: “Wonder Man has always been a favorite of mine, and Mark Buckingham is no different. It’s a thrill and an honor to collaborate with one of the kings of comics and a true gentleman. Simon Williams dreams of Hollywood, but his city and show business have fallen on hard times. Join us for a very special debut starring Wonder Man, his chosen family and the family he was born into. This is going to be something special.”

Buckingham added: “I was so happy to dive into the world of Wonder Man with this brand new solo series, and it was a pleasure to work with Gerry Duggan. Simon is a good person, but he doesn’t always make the best choices. He values his family and friends… but… , often to our own detriment, especially when it comes to Chancellor Randolph. We had fun designing the unique look of this book that helps establish us in Hollywood as Simon Williams reflects on his life in Los Angeles. There’s action, adventure, a little romance, and lots of laughs. ”

Williams, who derives his powers from ionic energy, has become one of the longest-running members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes since his creation by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck in 1964’s Avengers #9. He previously headlined a graphic novel in 1986, which was serialized from 1991 to 1994, a miniseries in 2007, and a book titled Avengers 2: Wonder Man and the Beast in 2000, co-starring longtime friend Hank McCoy.

The new Wonder Man #1 (1 of 5) will be released on March 18th and features a main cover by Paulo Siqueira, plus variants by Buckingham, Phil Noto, and Neso Díaz. In the meantime, the Wonder Man TV show will be released in its entirety on Disney+ on Tuesday, January 27th at 9pm ET. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon and Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, this meta take on the character will consist of eight half-hour episodes.
