Chris Claremont is the name people think of when thinking about the great X-Men stories, and few writers can match the depth of the story he spoke with the mighty mutants of Marvel. Over the years, Claremont has returned based on the classic story he gave to X-Canon. Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 are the latest entries in these throwback stories. It also reminds us of one of the greatest dynamics in X-Men history.
Wolverine and Kitty Pride #1 will take place after the 1984 Kitty Pride & Wolverine Miniseries event. Wolverine manages to kill Ogan, but Kitty is still struggling with his influence. And she struggles with Logan’s attempts to help her get through it. Soon, the mysterious change in the landscape leads to the love of Logan, Kitty, and Logan’s life love of Yashida, teleported into feudal times to deal with the mystical threat.
I often said that the best element of Wolverine’s character was how he became a leader of young mutants, and that it all began with Kitty Pride. Claremont understands the bond between the other two. After all, he was one of the first writers to start making Logan more than a slutty stubby Canadian, and he co-created the kitten. Claremont’s gift for character writing leads to deeper insights into these characters. Although Kitty has nothing to do with the life of a superhero, he gets brighter when he cares for Logan’s adopted daughter Amiko, but Wolverine ends up connecting with Kitty’s father in each struggle.
Amazing
Wolverine and Kitty Pride #1 also have the talent of the X-Men of the 80s, thanks to artist Damien Kusserio. Coucerio is not wasting time reaching the action. In fact, the matter literally begins with a sparring session between Kitty, Logan and the assassin Yukio. In another moment, Logan and Kitty take on a group of thugs who have had their psychic powers. Kuserio depicts a series of fluid action-packed movements that highlight both the X-Men’s martial arts skills.
It is all brought to life by Carlos Lopez’s coloured works. It is full of warm tones and unique color schemes. Most of Logan’s outfits represent the brown and tan of a 1980s Wolverine costume, but Kitty wears a mostly blue training uniform, a blue school uniform, and a new blue outfit that looks very similar to her classic Excalibur outfit. Even the caption of Ariana Maher gets a tan and brown tone to reflect Logan’s inner thoughts.
