Marvel Comics is embarking on the “What If…?” series. All one-shots about the potential Herald of Galactus. The Silver Surfer makes an appearance, and especially this week, the Hulk becomes a herald. What if…? A series of one-shots is storied, iconic, and even has a TV show, but can Marvel’s latest foray into alternate realities be a success? The answer is more or less.
What if there is something else…? In a Galactus one-shot, Hulk is probably the most logical. Gambit, Moon Knight, Spider-Gwen, and Rogue certainly make sense under the right circumstances, but Hulk is one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes, and thus the logical choice. Screenwriter Matt Groom also makes a strong case for why the Hulk would be a good fit, especially since he could be used as an excuse for Bruce Banner to leave Earth and keep everyone on Earth safe.
What if…? Galactus Transformed into the Hulk? #1 begins with Bruce flying to a soon-to-be-consumed planet, hoping people will follow his steps and prepare for escape. They are not. Bruce’s side seems to be hiding their intelligence and giving them a means of escape, but the people are stubborn and in some cases won’t leave without a fight.
You don’t want to see the Herald angry!

After a brief but moody beginning with the Hulk taking on a mission for the Herald, expertly drawn by Lan Medina and colored by Juancho Velez, the story moves into the main plot. This involves the Kree world of Elysium 3, where the Avengers are ready to stop Hulk and Galactus. This allows for an explanation that further explains the superhero fights and Hulk’s plight.
However, that’s about it for one-shots. Even with the words “The End” plastered on the last page, this issue feels like it’s far from over. Rather, it is the beginning of something bigger that you choose not to explore. Whether this one-shot is somehow relevant or not, we don’t know yet, but this issue ends in a way that could easily be incorporated into the one-shot format. It basically packs the biggest punch and will leave you wanting more.
What if…? Galactus Transformed into the Hulk? #1 has a compelling concept and great visual moments, but it struggles to tell a self-contained story, leaving readers with an unsatisfying sense of unfinished business. Masu. Fans of another Marvel reality may enjoy Hulk’s exploration as Galactus’ herald, but its lack of an ending may frustrate those looking for a definitive story.
