The studio has announced that it is developing an animated series based on Grimm Is for Netflix, with Alfred Gough and Miles Miller (creators of Wednesday, Youngville, etc.) and director Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Love, Death & Robots, Kung Fu Panda 3) serving as executive producers. Created in 2022 by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Flaviano, the comic follows newly deceased Jessica Hallow, who is tasked with becoming the Grim Reaper, transporting other souls to the afterlife.
The official synopsis for issue #1 details, “Unlike other Reapers,[Jessica]has no memory of what killed her and put her in this predicament. To solve the mystery of her own death, she must solve an even bigger mystery: Where is the real Grim Reaper?” The series ended earlier this month with issue 25 and had an average rating of 8.9/10 on ComicBookRoundup.com at the time of its conclusion.
Phillips said, “‘Grimm’ has meant so much to me and everyone who worked on it, and it’s so exciting to see it given new life (pun intended) as an animated series on Netflix. I can’t wait for fans old and new to step into the world of Jessica Hallow with us.” She and Flaviano will be credited as executive producers alongside Miller, Goff, Nelson and BOOM! Stephen Christie, Adam Yoelin and Mette Nokjaer in the studio.
The series is all about the latest titles, Dawn! The comics will be developed as media for Netflix following a first-look deal the two companies signed in 2020. Projects resulting from the deal include the animated series “Mech Cadets,” as well as future films and anime based on “BRZRKR,” starring Keanu Reeves and others. The TV version of “Something Is Killing the Children” became a hit. An adaptation in development for the streamer failed, after which the rights were acquired by Blumhouse.
At the time of writing, details such as writers, casting, and animation service providers have not been provided, but assuming all goes to plan, an announcement should be made in the near future. Meanwhile, issue 5, which collects the final five issues of Grimm Vol., will be released on April 7, 2026, while deluxe editions of the first 15 issues are available now. Phillips also remains busy between his latest creator-owned series “Endeavor” at DSTLRY and his Marvel projects, including the “Daredevil” reboot starting March 18th.
