In these chaotic times, people seem to be looking for entertainment and enlightenment. So we are on alert by Brian K. Vaughn and Steve Scollose.
The book was originally serialized consecutively in 2015 and collected in 2017, but the storyline is rather dull… and interesting.
We are wary of setting our future 100 years. The heroic band of Canadian civilians became technically superior enemies, freedom fighters who had to protect their homeland from invasion by the United States.
Vaughn was an American and a Scalose Canadian, so both sides of the conflict were covered. BKV was interviewed about the series at Beatback in 2016. The series was intended to make a statement, noting that his wife is Canadian (and he didn’t want to choose the side).
Vaughn: Nico Henrikon and I had already spoken all about the victims of the war conflict with Baghdad, and now I want to write about the actual violent resistance to the country I love. With current US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressing his desire for Canada, he has a book on Canadians fighting the trade war over looming national tariffs, and clearly a guerrilla war with the United States Clock seems a little closer to the reality of the end of the world. There have been huge war robots since they were set in the future, but there are no giant war robots yet.
This book seems to have been nerve-wracking. In the US, it is currently #23,092 in the book (see Top 100 books)
But he’s an even bigger seller in Canada, ranking #702 in books (see Top 100 books)
Sadly, I couldn’t find an equivalent category of “dystopian graphic novels” for Amazon in the US, but check out our bestseller list of graphic novels. #1,966 in the book, this is pretty good.
Last week, Publishers Weekly reported that dystopian novels in general were on sale suddenly.
During the week of President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the sale of Ray Bradbury’s 451 Fahrenheit, published by Simon & Schuster, hit #8 on bestseller list after selling around 24,600 copies I did. The 148% increase last week followed a 59% increase in the week that ended January 11th as historic wildfires continued to tear the city of Los Angeles.
Sales also skyrocketed in the 1984 75th anniversary edition and Animal Farm written by George Orwell. Sales in 1984 increased to around 19,500 copies sold at 192%, making it number 10 on the bestseller list, but Animal Farm sales rose 136%, selling more than 17,000 copies.
A quick check on Amazon showed in 1984 that Handmade Tales, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451 were all one of the top 20 bestsellers of literary fiction, so yeah, I brought darkness.
Anyway, it’s the thread that we’re on alert, indicating that BKV knows how it sometimes takes a little time.
