IDW Publishing has announced a new series starring Shredder, the arch-foe of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, entitled The Tmnt: Shredder. The book kicks off this August, written by Dan Watters (Lucifer), along with the art of Michele Bandini (Batman incorporated), follows Orokusaki, this time without the support of the Footclan, as he begins to rebuild power in the underworld of criminals in New York.
TMNT: Shredder #1 Cover A, Mateus Santolouco
Prepare for the ultimate Ronin rag to resurrection story. It has returned forever by trials that are beyond imagination. Betrayed by everyone around him, he was no longer a family of feet. In a deadly mission for vengeance, the old and new enemies cruelly discover what rebellion brings them at the end of the shredder blade.
The first solo shredder series (the honor lies in 2019 Shredder In Hell, but the aforementioned “the imagination beyond imagination by author/artist Mateus Sant Turkey) marks the first appearance of Orokusaki since the renewal of IDW’s major TMNT comics in collaboration with Jason Aaron. Last year, Watters and Bandini debuted at the TMNT universe. Alongside Bandini, Santrouco returns to provide cover and offers new character designs for the title character.
Senior Editor Andy Couri said, “TMNT: Shredder was the new title that was most enthusiastic when he worked for TMNT. Shredder is undoubtedly one of the coolest and most terrifying and iconic villains in the history of American comics. Lucifer, like his own innovative indie comics, reads like a training manual for how to write about Shredder.
Watters said, “The bad guys have always had the best stories. Shredder is no exception. This story is a shredder in the quest for revenge. It reminded me of why he rejected a long history and was so afraid of him. Riding in Hell.”
Bandini said, “I grew up with TMNT because I came from the 80s. I’ve always wanted the opportunity to work on one of the books since I was a little kid. Yes, I’ve wanted to be a comic book artist since I was five years old. Getting back what he deserves: the crown of the deadliest villain New York ever seen!”
TMNT: Shredder #1 Cover B, Michel Bandini
Khouri states of Bandini’s work: “Michele’s stunning cover artwork is a taste of passion and creativity that he brings to his projects. America, Europe, Asia, TMNT: Shredder integrates the comic book tradition that stands next to (main) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (series) as one of the most luxurious books of the year.”
TMNT: Shredder #1 was released on August 13th and can be seen below, along with the main cover of Santolouco, plus variations of Bandini, Kael Ngu, Dike Ruan and Stjepan Shijić. With each AIPT, IDW will further mark with shredder-themed variant covers of other TMNT comics that will be released later this year, namely TMNT #12 (Kevin Eastman #9 (Fero PE), and shredder-themed variant covers from Saturday Morning Adventure #28 (Erin Hunting) (Erin Hunting). This will all build more excitement for Shredder’s return to the big screen, with the current untitled mutant Mayhem sequel scheduled for October 9, 2026.
