For nearly 30 years, the Violator has been a major thorn in Spawn’s side. Created by Todd McFarlane, the Violator debuted in Image Comics’ Spawn #2 and quickly established himself as a worthy foe. Over the years, the demonic prankster has done some horrible things, from tormenting Spawn about his lost life with Wanda, to orchestrating Hell’s rule over Spawn, and even masterminding Spawn’s temporary death in issue #100. And now, in Violator: Origin #1, it’s finally revealed how one of Hell’s most terrifying demons was born. This six-issue miniseries takes us from Heaven to his banishment to Earth. Helmed by writer Marc Andreyko and artist Piotr Kowalski, issue one offers a glimpse into the Violator’s backstory, revealing a side of him that may surprise you, before he became the iconic menace we all love to hate.

In Violator: Origin #1, we learn that long before Violator did nightmarish things like ripping Spawn’s heart out of his body, he was a celestial being known as Baziel of Heaven (BH, or Heaven, “Before Humans”). Violator tells his own story, adding the dark humor and twisted charm we’ve come to expect from such a demonic creature. Story-wise, what I liked most about Violator: Origins is that every choice has long-term consequences, especially if you choose the path of manipulation and betrayal. Andreyko does a great job portraying Violator’s inner conflict, showing us that sometimes we are destined to become what we hold deep inside.

Piotr Kowalski’s artwork and Brad Simpson’s color work create a visual spectacle that feels like a blockbuster movie that leaps off the page. The cinematic flair is simply flawless, especially in scenes where we witness Badziel’s brutal transformation from a celestial being into the twisted nightmare that is The Violator.

Violator: Origin #1 is a great start for one of the most iconic villains in the Spawn universe – wicked, manipulative, and exuding the vibe that Spawn fans will love. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, Violator: Origin #1 provides a solid backstory and glimpse into Violator’s dark, sinister nature.
