Unity has released the latest version of its engine for developing games and interactive experiences. Unity 6 adds tools for projects on mobile platforms, including new workflows for creating online multiplayer games and mobile web support for Android and iOS browsers. The engine promises improved performance, especially in graphics rendering, and adds several features for creating more realistic environments through global lighting and other VFX. And it wouldn’t be a technology announcement without an AI component. The company also released the latest version of its Sentis neural network inference library for using AI models within the Unity engine.
The company suffered a major public perception blow when it attempted to revise its pricing structure last September. The proposed payment model would charge developers a fee each time a player downloads a work. This move sparked an outcry among game developers, especially in the indie scene. After a management shake-up and major layoffs, the company reversed most of its announced changes. In September of this year, the controversial fee was completely scrapped.
