The original Marvel Universe has been organically present for over 60 years. The ultimate universe architect was tasked with recapturing the universe from scratch. It was easy for them to choose Spider-Man and the X-Men as anchor points. These two franchises were Marvel’s bestselling tent poles. But from the beginning, the Ultimate Spider-Man and the Ultimate X-Men, the opening volleys of the original Ultimate Universe, stand at both extremes. The first can be seen as small, isolated, and intimate, while the latter is considered large, operatic and vast. Private vs. the public.
The act of creating the ultimate universe was the act of slowly revealing it, teasing familiar things before revealing the difference. Spider-Man did so with measured referrals of major enemies. The X-Men did that by introducing large groups.
If Ultimate Spider-Man chose to devote some issues to Spider-Man’s already overrated origins, Ultimate X-Men chose to start at least partially with Media Res. The entire team hasn’t come together, but Jean and Cyclops are already beginning to militarize. Shortly to face the eradication of Genosha, returning to Earth 616, Magneto sees his ultimate incarnation, responsible for different mutant civilizations in savage lands (equally susceptible to the extinction of sentinel-based).
Moreover, the Ultimate X-Men seems to be far more interested in expanding and exploring the ultimate universe than Spider-Man. The mutant phenomenon is a global challenge and therefore deserves a global cast. There are no infections from Rogues or Reimagined Story Arcs. Instead, there are entire X-Men regulars, but not fleeting. Nick Fury becomes an important support character, as Shield becomes a major aspect of the ultimate X-Men story.
This means that Ultimate X-Men is never interested in wasting its time or story real estate. Story beats must move, and those moving parts must be categorized as accurately and properly as possible. Where Ultimate Spider-Man enjoys characterizing his relationship with Peter Parker, X-Men often has little time to flesh out the nominal team, down to the harm of their personality. Scott doubles with Dowl, Jean becomes suspiciously aroused with Logan, and Nightcrawler does not learn English in the first 12 issues of the series. What we know about Storm and Colossus confuses existing knowledge about those characters. Their self-spiritual and stern nature has been replaced by a general youthful glow. These differences may have been used to surprise fans and overturn expectations, but only if the characters are investigated in detail. None of the issues collected in the Ultimate X-Men Epic Collection, The Tomorrow People.
This simply changes the scale of the ultimate X-Men approach to reconstructing the universe, rather than making it more successful than the Spider-Man approach. Mutant populations have undergone decades of real-world development, but the ultimate universe had to predict hundreds of characters from the jump. There is no room to explain the organic nuance that doesn’t have hundreds of pages.
Luckily, this book can plunder much of the overall complexity. One of the main tools towards this end was artists Adam and Andy Kubert, who worked on some of the most iconic X-Men stories of the late 80s and early 90s. This adds a massive pedigree to longtime fans who have become accustomed to the style being applied to Sentinel, Sublime Tooth and Summer.
Tomorrow’s people will become the basis for people in the larger ultimate universe, and this will be achieved at a fierce pace. The two opening moves of the Ultimate Universe couldn’t be more different, but both captured the franchise perfectly, which made the franchise exciting and iconic. Even with the necessary flattening of Claremonty’s plot, the Ultimate X-Men established the entire world of mutants.
