At the “Marvel Comics: The Next Big Thing” panel held Thursday at New York Comic Con, the publisher announced a new series joining the Ultimate Universe. In January, Ultimate Wolverine, written by Chris Condon and drawn by Alessandro Cappuccio, will join the lineup. This series will stay true to Wolverine’s origins while adding Winter Soldier elements.
The Maker, also known as the Creator of the Ultimate Universe’s Secrets, controls this version of Logan, who has been mindwiped to be used as an assassin. Of course, he is still the best at what he does, but he has no say in who receives his special skills. According to the announcement, Maker council members Magic, Colossus, and Omega Red will deploy the Winter Soldier (in this case Logan) to maintain control of the ultimate corner of the universe.
“When Will Moss called me and asked me if I wanted to challenge for this title, I jumped at the chance and immediately knew what to do with it,” Condon said. “I’m bringing the essence of the storytelling from ‘The Texas Blood’ to the Marvel Universe with Wolverine, looking back and bringing us something new.
“You may notice that there is a red star on his costume and you may wonder why,” he continued. “If you look at that mask, he has a muzzle on it. That’s because he’s wild.”
