UK digital driving licenses to be introduced later this year

The UK plans to release a digital driving license along with a government-issued digital wallet later this year. This will allow people to “easily prove their age when purchasing age-restricted products online or in person.” Naturally, it also proves the individual’s right to drive.

This will be one of the first digital documents available through the GOV.UK digital wallet, which will also be launched later this year. The wallet will also hold documents such as veterans cards, Department of Disclosure and Barring (DBS) checks, and “all other government-issued credentials.” However, many of these digital versions will not be available until the end of 2027.

This technology leverages the latest smartphone security features to enhance your privacy. The document will not open without a facial recognition check. The government says this will make digital documents more secure “even if you lose your device.” We’ll have to see how it goes.

It also provides a way to hide certain information when users view digital licenses. For example, Top Gear reported that the technology would allow people to hide their home address when paying for goods.

The best part? This is an opt-in technology. Traditional physical documents are still available in case you want to keep your official ID visible on your phone. British citizens can already apply for a license and pay road tolls online using a stored digital photo.

Digital driver’s licenses are not new. Many countries already use it, including Australia, Denmark, Iceland and Norway. Some US states, including Ohio and New Mexico, also use the technology.
