The Internet Archive is one of the best on the web, so it’s great to see the repository up and running again after the recent DDoS attack. However, it hosts more than just old versions of web pages. It hosts tons of videos (eternally grateful to whoever uploaded the awesome Lucha Underground in its entirety), software, text, audio recordings, and games. On the latter front, there have been two notable additions, likely courtesy of Epic Games, in the form of Unreal and Unreal Championship.
You can now freely download Arena Shooter disc images from the Internet Archive via direct links to Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Alternatively, as Game Developer points out, the OldUnreal site offers installers for Unreal and UT, both of which pull disk images from the Internet Archive and include the latest community-created patches.
The installer is currently Windows only, but the OldUnreal team is working on Linux and macOS versions. You’ll also have to put in a little more effort to get the game online and get a taste of true multiplayer. Hey, you might still be able to join an Unreal clan.
Epic removed Unreal games from Steam and shut down its servers a long time ago. So this is a great boost for game saves. This comes on the heels of GOG introducing new labels for older titles that the platform maintains for current hardware. Unreal was one of the first PC games I played as a kid. So it’s great to know that Unreal will be available forever through the Internet Archive.
