AirTags can monitor more than just keys. Although Apple doesn’t officially recommend Bluetooth trackers for dogs and cats, they’re still a popular use. And of all the trackers I tested, these were the closest to actually working for moving objects. While GPS tags provide more accurate location monitoring, they tend to be more expensive and require a subscription, making them less ideal as gifts.
Although AirTags relies on Bluetooth, the range is excellent and the triangulation between the tag and a nearby iPhone is eerily accurate, allowing you to get within meters of your lost tag. Ultra-wideband (UWB) directions are then displayed within a few feet. A friend of mine is the director of an animal shelter, and just in case, he attaches four collars with AirTag attachments to dogs that are “at risk of flight” when he is adopted. — Amy Skolheim, reporter
