TMNT #12 brings a new status quo change for our heroes in a half shell (spoilers ahead)

Spoilers for TMNT #12 now available

Last year, IDW Publishing relaunched the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles titles with writer Jason Aaron. The first issue was a critical and commercial success. With today’s release of TMNT issue #12, Aaron and artist Juan Ferreira, along with a new creative team of writers Gene Luen Yang and Freddie E. Williams, are bidding farewell to Heroes in the Half Shell, who will take over the book with issue #13 in December.

It’s safe to say that IDW is promoting the new creative team’s first issue with a blind bag variant promotion and has already received 100,000 orders. With the right strategy, publishers don’t necessarily have to constantly re-release their #1 titles every few years.

It seems like one particular site (Bleeding Cool) is actually holding back spoilers for the final page of TMNT #12, even though they tend to leak spoilers days before a comic’s release.

Master Splinter is back! After much speculation, the Turtles’ teacher is brought back to life thanks to a mystical ritual performed by Karai, Shredder’s granddaughter and current leader of the Foot Clan. During Aaron’s escape, Splinter had been communicating spiritually with his sons, but now he is back in the land of the living.

As fans well know, in 2020 Splinter sacrificed his life in TMNT #100 to resurrect his eternal enemy, Saki Koroku, aka Shredder, and save the world in the process. This is not the first time Splinter has died. Most notably, Splinter from the 2012 Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was killed off in Season 4.

Needless to say, both IDW and the new TMNT creative team have been tight-lipped regarding Splinter’s return, which will no doubt spark fan speculation. In fact, there’s a good chance Splinter’s new role in TMNT will keep fans in the face for a long time with the tease of a brand new villain known as the Ujigami. Another cover reveals an early look at Ujigami, but there’s still a lot we don’t know about this character. Based on the limited information available, particularly the character’s martial arts talent and four fingers on each hand, there is enough credence to hypothesize that Ujigami is actually Splinter in disguise under Karai’s thrall.
