Threads will show how many followers they have within the Fediverse

Meta has steadily improved Threads and fediverse compatibility over the last year. Now, the company is taking another significant step forward with an update that allows users to see details about their followers and interactions with people on other servers across the Fediverse.

Until now, Threads has shown replies from Mastodon and other servers, and alerted users to like posts from other Fediverse apps. However, there was no way for Threads users to see details about their followers from these services. That’s now changing, Adam Mosseri explained in a post.

With this update, anyone who opts in to Fediverse sharing on a thread will be able to see a detailed list of their followers from other servers and view their profiles. This gives Threads users better visibility into their reach and audience on Mastodon and other apps.

Fediverse support for threads is still somewhat limited overall. Users still cannot reply to replies originating from apps other than Threads, and there is no way to search for users on other servers from Threads. Also, there is still a lag in cross-posting. Meta has also expanded the post editing window, so posts from threads now take 15 minutes to appear.

Elsewhere, third-party developers are also making it easier for users who want to post to multiple distributed services. A new app called Croissant lets you cross-post to Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky all at once. The paid app, first spotted by TechCrunch, aims to replicate the functionality of enterprise social media management apps like Buffer.
