Living in Florida is a surreal experience. It’s a place where having alligators everywhere might be the most common thing. This is a state where theme parks can dictate government policy, and there are all kinds of adults named after theme parks. There’s something about America’s southernmost state that attracts not just weirdos, but strange experiences as well.
So when a comic like “Florida’s Hippo Cocaine Massacre” comes along, you know it’s going to happen on a Wednesday afternoon.
This winter, Mad Cave Studios will release “Florida Hippo Cocaine Massacre.” It’s a four-issue, synth-heavy action comedy from writer Fred Kennedy (Dead Romans, Assassin’s Creed: Power), with art, colors, and letters by James Edward Clarke (Evil Comics, Tales to Enlightenment), with variant cover B by Italian comics superstar Mirka Andolfo (Sweet Paprika).
Disco Hippo Wonderland is Flamingo City’s premier amusement park. But few people realize that its fat owner, Jans Mjöll Diskau, is about to launch Coca-Cola 45, the most powerful drug ever created. Fortunately for humanity, Nebraska State Investigator Clark is on the case. She will defeat Diskau no matter what! That was her plan until her undercover agent, Tico Senecoza, was captured! And before she can rescue him, Mikel – Tico’s brother’s sexy loose cannon beats her to the ground and storms into the park amid a hail of bullets. Diskau panics and throws Coke 45 into the hippo’s enclosure, releasing it into the park before escaping into Wonderland’s tunnel network. Nebraska’s plans are completely derailed and the situation worsens when a hurricane fueled by marijuana smoke floods the park with heavy rain. It’s up to Nebraska and Mikel to make an uncomfortable truce to defeat Diskau before he escapes!
President Kennedy said in a statement: “I’m a little shocked that this book was published…I’m not saying I don’t think it’s a good book.” “I think it’s great! But I think it’s even more so because there isn’t a lot of stupidity these days. This book is stupid, very stupid. And I don’t think there’s ever been a time when the need for stupidity is greater.”
Artist James Edward Clarke added: “I would like to commend Fred and Mad Cave for their courage in seeing this project through to its completion. Together, I hope to draw the public’s attention to the very real and immediate danger posed by nature’s most vile, disgusting, abhorrent and abominable hippopotamus.”
From the cocaine-splattered hallways of Flamingo City to the rain-soaked tunnels of Hippo Disco Wonderland, Florida’s Hippo Cocaine Massacre is a fever dream of over-the-top violence, slapstick humor, and Reagan-era paranoia. Every explosion has a punchline and every cover is Oscar-worthy.
