Want to see something really bittersweet? The co-creator of the absolutely incredible sci-fi comic Scavenger’s Rain released a trailer for the second season shortly after Netflix decided not to fund its renewal. It’s a minute of new footage featuring bloodthirsty plants, bat-monkey hybrids, and all sorts of psychedelic sci-fi madness.
The teaser was produced in-house using the production company’s own funds. Co-creator Joe Bennett wrote on Instagram: “This is not the end. There are so many more stories to tell and we’re ready to make another season.” has not been renewed for a second season.”
The show premiered on Max a few years ago and had a rocky ride before being canceled. The critically acclaimed first season ended up on Netflix and found new viewers. The so-called “Netflix bump” had fans looking forward to the renewal, but it was unexpected. It’s still possible that the buzz generated from this trailer will entice other streamers to invest in the show. Apple TV+ certainly has a ton of sci-fi shows, so why not add one more? Someone honk Tim Cook.
If you haven’t seen Scavenger’s Rain yet, you can watch it on Netflix now. This is one of the best science fiction shows ever made, animated or not. It’s really very, very good. If you’re into classic sci-fi and gorgeous animation, this is for you. The work has been called “a Mobius comic brought to life” and a “gorgeous, hypnotic journey through space.”
The show follows a group of survivors scattered on an alien planet after a shipwreck. As they struggle to survive and find help, they encounter bizarre events never before thought of. It’s like a 1950s science fiction novel come to life, but with, well, an acid trip mixed in.
The voice cast includes Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat, Loki’s Wunmi Mosaku, and more. The first season has 12 episodes, so there’s plenty to enjoy. I’m just saying.
