The Ultimate Wolverine #3 Review

If the Ultimate Wolverine has a throughline, then Logan is deeply abused and unable to escape prison, a murder machine. Ultimate Wolverine #3 will be competing this week and will provide Logan with a glow of hope, but not before they hunt to kill Kitty Pryde and Gambit!

Things are getting much more juicy in the ultimate Wolverine #3. Nightcrawler and Mystique may not have made it, but the mere sight of Wolverine created memories for them. The same can be said about Kitty and Gambit, who are opening up this issue in a snowstorm. They are looking for drivers, but behold, it is another character you remember from the newly created 616 in the Ultimate Universe.

Part of the fun of these ultimate universe titles is to understand how new dynamics and classic characters fit together. For example, Gambit is a bit of a freedom fighter and a perfect badass. At one point, someone is blown up with his power and they turn into bones. It looks like an upgrade. He and Kitty are both dark, more tired, and perhaps a little older here.

Alessandro Cappuccio’s visuals are impressive. From the first striped blizzard to a cool montage of memories spurred by the power of Kitty Pride, Cappuccio and colour artist Brian Barenza truly offers something very different from the standard superhero art style that fits the eager dream of being the weapon of others in Wolverine.

And because Wolverine’s weapon will undoubtedly show Cappuccio to tear him apart several more people. Watching blood drip from his sticky and thick is truly something that stays with you. Valenza can work in many darkness. This really pops the Wolverine red suit with a striped orange in the background.

This issue also includes two data pages at the end of the comic. Both are creative in their own way, one is an online news article, and the other is a poster. They add depth to the Wolverine situation and are well-made.

Ultimate Wolverine #3 continues to build a charming, ruthless world where Logan is trapped in his own nature. Powerful character reinventions, visually stunning artwork and intense action provide a thrilling reading, even if it occasionally stomps on the familiar ground. With the addition of data pages and growing cast, the series is persuasive, making this a standout issue in the ultimate universe reboot.

The introduction of the more familiar X-Men adds a plot.

The darker, more seasoned depictions of Gambit and Kitty bring a fresh edge.

Wolverine’s brutal sequence of actions is unforgettable and memorable.

The story leaps heavily towards Wolverine as a weapon, and can be felt repeatedly.
