Following the premiere of the Critical role: The Mighty Nein animated series on Prime Video, the prequel comic Critical role: The Mighty Nein Origins has officially debuted on Webtoon.
Based on Critical Role’s second real-life campaign (2018-2021), The Mighty Nein follows a ragtag group of unlikely heroes who come together in search of an esoteric artifact known as “The Beacon” that has fallen into dangerous hands. To save the kingdom, they must learn the power of teamwork and retrieve the artifacts before everything (literally) falls apart.
The prequel comic, The Mighty Nein Origins, explores the group’s early adventures and provides fans old and new with plenty of backstory and character moments. The webtoon debut is part of the platform’s partnership with Dark Horse Comics, which currently holds the publishing rights to Critical Role Comics.
The Mighty Nine Origins made its print debut in 2021 with a double-sized one-shot about Laura Bailey’s clown Lavore (written by Sam Maggs, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer, illustrated by Hunter Severn Bonyun, colored by Kathie Lee, and letters by Arianna Maher). The series has since released seven additional titles, each focusing on a different member of the group. A hardcover collector’s set containing all eight volumes of the comic was released on November 4th.
Webtoon’s vertically scrolling free version, The Mighty Nein Origins, similarly brings together the entire series in a new, web-optimized format. Therefore, the first five episodes available in the webtoon are about the clown Lavore, while episodes 6 to 8 are about Caleb Widgast, played by Liam O’Brien (written by Jody Houser, Liam O’Brien, and Matthew Mercer, with art by Serena Espiritu, colors by Diana Sousa, and letters by Ariana Mercer).
Check out preview panels for the first two episodes below. Note: Only three episodes are available via your web browser. To read all eight, you need the Webtoon mobile app.
The five episodes of the webtoon are tied to a printable one-shot of The Mighty Nein Origins. If vertically scrolling comics follow the publication order of paper comics, character stories will be published in the following order after Caleb:
Yasha Nidulin (written by Cecil Castellucci, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, illustrated by William Kirkby, colored by Diana Sousa, letters by Ariana Maher), Fjord Stone played by Ashley Johnson (Chris “Doc” Wyatt, Kevin Burke, Travis Willingham, Matthew Mercer, illustrations by Serena Espiritu, colors by Diana Sousa, letters by Ariana Maher) Travis Willingham Not the Brave (written by Sam Maggs, Sam Riegel, Matthew Mercer, illustrated by William Kirkby, Colors: Ellen Angiolini, Letters: Ariana Maher), Role: Sam Riegel Mollymac Tealeaf (Written by Jody Houser, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Illustrations: Hunter Severn Bonyun, Colors: Kathy Le, Letters: Ari Anna Maher), played by Taliesin Jaffe Beauregard Lionette (written by Mae Kat, Marisha Ray, Matthew Mercer, illustrated by Guilherme Barbi, colored by Diana Sousa, letters by Ariana Maher), played by Marisha Ray) Caduceus Clay (written by Kendra Wells, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, illustrated by Selina Espiritu, colored by Ellen Angiolini, lettered by Ariana Maher), played by Taliesin Jaffe
