Invincible Space: Battle Beasts have even entered a deadly combat style tournament, imprisoned that honorable, bloodthirsty fighter plane in an alien world, a whole spaceship. The question remains: what else can I throw at him? Answer: What about actual witches? You heard that right, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 features a literal witch.
Let’s backtrack: After a series of detours, the beast of battle and the prince accompanying him finally arrives on the Prince’s planet. It is a world full of hungry creatures, strange vegetation, dominated by iron fist by the sister of the colossus who fought the Beast in the first issue. And of course there is a witch. The witch uses her shape shifts and spells to invite our party into the trap.
At first, magic doesn’t seem to fit into the general atmosphere of the invincible universe. But this is an invincible universe, with magic presenting along with aliens, superheroes, cyborgs and other comic book trappings. This is proof of the writing of Robert Kirkman. That means he can create magical elements of the invincible universe.

Kirkman also injects the issue with his trademark sense of humor. Imagine a beast in battle with friends, it is hilarious in itself. But there are moments when it comes to how unexpected it was, and how dull it is, making you laugh out loud. This humor needs to be incorporated further as future issues serve as the perfect balance of bloody violence.
Speaking of bloody violence, the Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #4 is not as gory as the last three issues, but it packs some great images thanks to Ryan Ottley. In this issue, Ottley has a fantasy vibe, with the creature fighting the Beast looking like a giant mutant version of Final Fantasy’s Chocobo, a plant that looks like a living creature. As for the Witch herself, she starts to look like your standard Frank Franzetta painting before transforming into something completely terrifying.
Without the colours of Annalisa Leoni this won’t work. She really captures the alien vibe of the environment. The forest has a yellowish green vibe that feels truly alien yet completely hypnotic, and the witch uses a strange kind of green energy for her spell, making it one of the book’s coolest moments. The little bloodshed in the book is delivered by a red splash, indicating more cruelty in the future.
Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #4 burns a little slowly, but the creative team can shape an entirely new planet and soak your toes into a new genre. If future issues come inspiration, they can truly liven up the future conflicts of Battle Beast and open more doors into an invincible universe.
