We need more Thanksgiving-themed comic covers. Marvel and Terry and Rachel Dodson are answering our prayers with a Turkey Fest-themed variant cover for ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #11.
For years now, whenever I’m drawing something Thanksgiving or comic book themed, I’ve made do with this absolutely amazing JLA cover by the late Carlos Pacheco. The cover depicts Power Girl cheerfully bending over as she delivers a roasted turkey with all the trimmings to hungry people. A horde of JLAers.
But Marvel goes the extra mile with this Spider-Man family cover. In the current Ultimate Spider-Man series, masterfully crafted by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checketto, Peter Parker is a happily married husband and father who webslings in his spare time. There’s no anxiety about secret identities, and readers seem to like it.
To celebrate, here’s a look at the Dodson family as Mary Jane proudly delivers her roast turkey to the Spider family, all smiles on their faces…for now.
His secret double life is exposed and Spidey joins his wife and children for a picturesque Thanksgiving feast. But don’t be fooled! This Peter Parker’s life is far from perfect, with looming threats like Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, and the Sinister Six, the mad otherworldly lead behind the creation of this corrupt world.・It goes without saying that the maker that is Richards is about to return. World—Peter will need the support of Mary Jane, May, and Richard Parker now more than ever.
Like Pacheco, this cover is a continuation of Normal Rockwell’s famous “Saturday Evening” post cover, but Dodson added a few more features, including Spidey’s upside-down kiss immortalized in the first Spider-Man movie. I’m adding an homage to that. Peter also tries to steal drumsticks, but who hasn’t? – But if he takes the turkey off the plate, nothing is asked and nothing is given.
