That’s right, you guys read that title correctly! It looks like some of the world’s most popular Turtles are set to meet the nine-tailed fox’s host, Naruto Uzumaki! Kakashi Hatake, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Hanao Sakura will play April O’Neil in Konoha He will be escorted from the hidden village to his hometown, and attracts attention. Specifically, from the Foote family. This issue already seems to be very popular. Just last month, we reported orders for more than 100,000 copies. Issue #1 is finally out, but is it worth the hype?

Well, I’ve only read up to chapter 27 of Naruto, but I’ve never actually read the TNMT comics (although I love the drama and recent movies). So I’m looking at this from the perspective of a semi-novice reader. Given that this story seems to be set in Naruto’s early days and is a limited series, it stands to reason that this story should be relatively adaptable. Thankfully, that’s true.

IDW Publishing

There seem to be only a handful of subtle moments that hint at what direction the Naruto world will go in, but there are some unbelievable moments that would spoil it for readers who aren’t familiar with it. No one does anything like that. Similarly, the Turtles are similarly balanced. Each one has its own charm, while still retaining its mysteries. Overall, the characters themselves have enough personality and uniqueness to show how much effort research writer Caleb Gellner has put into preparing this book.

One of the biggest concerns some readers may have had was whether the art could represent the style of Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. That said, I think the story is told in a perfect style. The story itself is straightforward and involves getting April home safely and fighting off ninjas, but it’s the art that helps enhance the story. Here, artist Hendry Prasetia and colorist Raul Angulo share their amazing story. Prasetya successfully blends the tones of the two worlds, with well-defined characters and full of emotion, which helps elevate the story to one full of heart, action, and intrigue.

What’s more, Anglo’s colors create more intense moments, fights seem more vivid, and characters’ powers glimmer on the page. Additionally, this color helps balance the bright tones of the Naruto anime with the sci-fi action of the TNMT world. Overall, this issue’s strong visuals help turn a light-hearted premise into a fun, action-packed story.

Overall, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1 is a very enjoyable story that spends a lot of time introducing the reader to the world of Naruto before interweaving it with the Turtles. This works to provide insight into what direction the story is going, while ensuring that every character in this strong cast is given the spotlight. Additionally, this book seems to be written for very beginners, which makes this book even more enjoyable for this new reader.

Bottom Line: In its first issue, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #1 successfully encapsulates both worlds, offering an exciting mashup of two popular titles.

Pros: The story combines both worlds nicely

Pro: This issue is nothing short of a visual masterpiece

Cons: The story itself is a bit easy to understand, but nevertheless remains interesting and provides a strong cliffhanger

Rating: 9.5/10
