Tales of the Shire, a heartwarming life-simulation game set in the Lord of the Rings universe, has been delayed until 2025. It was originally scheduled to be released this year. Developer Weta Workshop, the company behind the special effects for all of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films, said the delay was necessary to ensure players could experience a fully realized version of the original concept.
It’s a heartwarming life sim in the same vein as Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and countless others, but set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Combining a heartwarming sim formula with an existing IP tends to work — just ask fans of Disney’s Dreamland Valley.
If there’s one element of Tolkien’s world that fits the genre, it’s the Hobbits and their Shire. The upcoming game prioritizes food preparation – we all know Hobbits love to feast – and allows players to design the look of their very own Hobbit hideout. There’s fishing and farming, of course, but it also seems to have a robust character interaction system. We’re not sure if there will be romance, but the Hobbit population doesn’t grow organically.
The developers will be hosting a live showcase event on September 22nd at 10:30am ET to discuss new aspects of the game and go over various mechanics. They’ll also use the stream to announce the actual release date, which will also be sometime in 2025. We might also get an update on the Hobbit-based romance during the showcase.
With that in mind, I wonder if other culturally significant IP could benefit from this cozy life simulation experience. The Walking Dead has always tried to do farming, but the zombie presence would be more of a never-ending nightmare than an uncomfortable one. I can imagine farming and building a society on some of the outer planets of the Star Wars universe, or even on Nowhere as seen in the MCU movies.
