Director Taika Waititi and screenwriter Drew Pearce are developing a new film outing for the future purple Roman, Judge Dread. Little details are known, but they are thought to adhere closely to the source material. The news broke through the Hollywood Reporter.
Producers for the film include Rebellion Developments, Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, Ben Smith rights holders, Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso, Drew Pearce and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment.
Beyond the announcement, the Hollywood reporter’s work has hardly gone on, so real film outings could go a long way. If that happens, there are some interesting snippets that can point to the direction of your trip.
“A source says Pierce and Waitty are both friends who grew up in books and have been trying to find projects they will work together for years.”
and:
“The loglines are stored under the visor, but pitches are said to rely on world building and dark humor, taking more inspiration from cartoons than previous screen repetitions.
Created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezkera, Judge Dredd is an interesting and flexible comic. Since its founding on the page for British Weekly Anthology 2000 AD in 1977, the series has evolved into a full-fledged off-kill future world that allows creators to tell the genre of the story. The comic heyday of the late 1970s and 1980s, co-written by John Wagner and Alan Grant, was filled with action and chewing satire. It’s unlikely that this is the direction Waititi and Pearce want to film the film’s outings proposed.
Judge Dredd has adapted to the big screen twice previously. The second half of Dredd in 2012 was the first time in the adaptation of Sylvestor Stallone-Straging 1995 by Danny Cannon. While fans and critics hit the 1995 iteration, director Pete Travis’s 2012 outing was led by Alex Garland and starring Carl Urban, but did not light the box office.
Despite fan efforts and petitions, hopes for a sequel to the rave reviewed 2012 film may certainly be dead, and it appears that the rights holders of the rebellion are about to reboot. It was announced in 2017 that there will be the Judge of Dread: MegaCity One TV series, planned as an ensemble show linked to the 2012 film. It came after a deal was struck between the rebellion and IM Global. Rumors say the show claimed it happened, but it claimed that the launch of a pandemic Scupper Plan is planned. And Karl Urban is a busy guy.
New Zealand filmmaker Waititi is probably best known to comic fans as the acclaimed director of Thor: Ragnarok (and the director who doesn’t read too much of a Thor: Love & Thunder). Judge Dread is not an adaptation of the comics he is obsessed with. In 201, 9, he was obsessed with Flash Gordon Projects and was announced to direct Alejandro Jodorovsky & Mobius’ adaptation of Inkal’s Abig Skren. He also reportedly still has a Star Wars project in the pipeline. None of these were released at the time of writing.
Drew Pierce is a British screenwriter, director and producer. His script credits include Iron Man 3 (2013), Missio: n Inthegibl-: Rogue Nation (2015), and The Fall Guy (2024). He will also be directed by Michael B. Jordan as the writer of the upcoming remake of the 1968 film Thomas Crown Affair.
The 2000 Advertising Owners Rebellion is currently in the process of increasing promotions for their other property. Jerry Finley Day and Dave Gibbons created the Genetic Infantry Rogue Trooper. The fully CGI film written and directed by Duncan Jones is set to hit the screen with more information (and hopefully a trailer) that will drop at San Diego Comic-Con next year.
