A new TMNT game is in town. This is unlike anything this series has attempted before. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is, as the name suggests, a turn-based strategy RPG. This means that the player controls a character on a grid-based map, with each turn representing some movement or action.
There is one thing that sets this game apart from other SRPGs. Combat takes “several minutes” to complete. This is very different from the time-consuming tasks found in games like Unicorn Overlord. From the trailer, the battles look even more lively than in the Mario + Rabbids series. Players will also control each turtle individually in a solo campaign before teaming up to take on bosses.
The graphics are cartoony and on-brand, reminding me of tabletop sessions with D&D miniatures. From the sewers to the New York City subways, all of the turtles’ favorite hangouts seem to be represented here. This could be a great way to bring in new players to the genre.
Paramount Game Studios
It’s a unique addition to the TMNT series, but it’s also a new type of game for developer Scaffold Games. This is the company that brought us the totally disturbing Clickholding and the third-person shooter El Paso, Elsewhere. The company also produced “I Am Your Beast” and “Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator.” None of these titles are turn-based tactical RPGs.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown is scheduled to be released for PC sometime next year. You can pre-order the game now via Steam. Publisher Paramount Game Studios hasn’t said anything about a possible console release, so perhaps Pizza Party will be postponed.
