Often there won’t be a massive release later in the series, but that’s the case with Superior Avengers #4. The villain team from another era is thrown away with the Avengers, but their plans and the truth behind their persona will be fully revealed this week. It becomes a clear, satisfying turn in the story.
Superior Avengers #4 opens with a flashback to Ghost’s Origins. Painted by Kyle Hotz, we soon see Annihilus becoming destroying everything, and the mother protects the child. In distractions, exchanges take place, leading to revelation of this issue.
The story is then picked up from there. From there he returns from there as Vision is unsure to realize that he killed the Ghost. There’s a lot to Ghost because she’s just a robot and runs a few different things. First, there’s a surprise from members of the Avengers, as well as immediate action from the Superior Avengers. It’s interesting to see the Avengers do their quick work at this moment.
Funny!

The meat in question focuses on ghosts. Author Steve Foxe makes heavy lifts in this three-page sequence, splitting the page into another excellent Avenger document. Through some captions the Ghosts have spoken about, we learn about their trade, goals, and basic origins. It’s a fun three-page scene that offers lots of details and clever hooks. In particular, the onslaught will talk to fans of X-Men and Krakoa. These vignettes are worth reading.
In many ways, these obvious flashbacks and cliffhangers go far beyond the last three issues. Now that we know what the team members are doing, the story really starts cooking on an event-level cliffhanger. Certainly, this book is very exposted, but adding a lot of context is satisfying.
Artist Luca Maresca and color artist Mattia Iacono continue to produce high-quality works with painted expressions and superhero suits. The layout and story structure are a bit stiff, but easy to manage. Hotz’s Art is dynamic, leaning towards the horror of flashbacks, increasing the stakes after a hit with the cliffhanger drawn by Maresca.
Superior Avengers #4 brings the most persuasive issues to date with impactful reveals, emotionally charged flashbacks, and clear turning points of the series. Despite the heavy load of the expo, the rise in character insights and interests makes this a must-read chapter.
