One of the best cartoons of DC’s All-in Initiative is Sophie Campbell’s Supergirl. Aside from the fact that the comic is fun to read every month and embraces Kara Zoruel’s Silver Age history in the best ways, it also expands the Steel’s supporting cast and the Girls of the World. It’s also a manga that still portrays deeper characters, even in a more humorous moment.
In Supergirl #5, Campbell takes a break from focusing on Kara and her friends Lena Luther and Lesla Rah, focusing on her life’s super pet. Along with guest artists Paulina Ganuci and Rosi Kempe, Campbell sends Kara and Lesla to Metropolis for training, watching Rena over her superpet. But as all humans who lived with the animals know, once humans leave the house, the fur baby mayhem continues. Campbell embraces all of this idea in both humorous and sincere ways.
DC Comics
The first super pet team up Campbell focuses on the improvisational alliance of Crypto’s Super Dog and Lesla’s Super Rabbit Candy. Campbell brings back the Princess Shark from Supergirl #1 to fight against two superpets, but the heartbeat of this story feels conflicted about teaming up with Crypto. On the other hand, she knows that Lesla had previously instructed him to treat Supergirl and her pets as enemies. Candy continues on that trajectory and believes he will be proud of Lesla if he ultimately defeats Crypto. However, as the story progresses, Candy enjoys Crypto’s company, and the latter begins to feel happy. He made new friends.
But the best part about Crypto and Candy’s team up is that Campbell writes that he acts the real dog and rabbit way. As humans with fur babies know, there are three things that dogs and rabbits love more than anything: food, sleep, and being spoiled. Campbell brought these qualities to the forefront, and Crypto and Candy finally have the opportunity to enjoy being animals. Not only can they be super pets that help human Cryptons save the world, they can also be animals.
In addition to stopping Princess Shark from wreaking havoc with the mid veil, Crypto is quick to be friendly with Candy, just like any other dog who has been fascinated by the presence of other animals. Similarly, Candy gets a moment of spoilt by Crypto, and ultimately gets one reward that all fur babies enjoy: food. If the team-up between Crypto and Candy was so slight that it was a pure pleasure to read, Campbell could still take it a step further with Streak and Titano (now called “Tainitano”).
DC Comics
The most hilarious super pet team up is because of Tinytano and Streaky Adventure, the way they perceive superheroes. Streaky is like Batman in terms of dealing with problems that are purely out of responsibility and is very systematic in his approach to solving problems. He also has a very “I work alone” mindset like many real cats. In other words, he’s very easily annoyed with tagging him with him on an adventure. But this is what makes their team up an exciting read: Tinytano really likes to react to trouble, even if it gives him something fun.
Of course, the character who suffers from the brunt of a super pet prank is Lena Luthor. But, in addition to Campbell’s solid script, much of the hilarity of these situations is facilitated by the pencils of Paulina Ganuchi and Roshi Kempe. Both artists have an anime-inspired art style, so this will drive the bold nature of super pet adventures and help sell the cuteness of their actions. The artwork also conveys the excitement of both Crypto and Tinitano, teaming up with another superpet, while concisely conveying both candy and striped emotions during the mission.
Overall, Supergirl #5 is the perfect standalone issue for both DC fans and animal lovers. It has a brilliant attitude in using the Silver Age ratio trop when it comes to the mayhem-causing Cryptonian animals. It also gave space to heartfelt moments like crypto and candy, enjoying food together, and feeling of tinitano and stripes was achieved after saving orphan kitten. Kara and Lesla are not prominent in this issue, but their absence works in the favor of the super pets. Because they allow them to be completely wild and unleashed, making them one of the best stories in Superman Line comics.
