Summer Batch #4 Review

Juni Ba’s Monkey Meat Anthology feels like a mix of white lotus and Rick and Morty, but it’s unique. Placed on a tropical island where demons, ghosts and monkeys live, the flesh of the monkeys is no wonder. Summer Batch #4 focuses on vacation life. You can assume that the twists in the series during the holidays will make things very bad for some, but a few will apply in one or more ways.

Kicking things off in the first story is a hotel receipt for what looks like a very expensive room for what you’re getting. Soon, they may be near the amusement park as a family of four stays there, but it becomes a real dump. So much trash disappears, but when illuminated by the phone, they learn that a strange man is with them. So, hurry to kill and escape a man who appears to be familiar with the place.

BA pours this story into a fantastic cartoon, like a close-up of a man depicted in black and white except for the yellow eyes of his piercings. Family members are naturally afraid, but learning the truth about apartments reminds us of how Monkey Meat Corp is in contact. Most often, the characters’ stories that are confused about the situation are leaning towards action for now, and advance with 3 star reviews on all the apps we’ve used previously.

The second story follows a travel influencer who came to Monkey Meat Island, and somehow considers the giant Army mecha to be some sort of holiday experience. BA does an amazing job of summarizing the details of the story, so at the end you get a full picture of this character’s backstory, but if you follow the travel influencer on Instagram, he’s very familiar. He is ignorant of his surroundings while pretending to be one with the culture.

As the story progresses, the situation shifts from a confused traveler to a complete war against the ancient spirit. The fight is intense and features cool designs of mech and spirit, alongside a melancholy yet too realistic revelation of what is going on behind the walls laid by the rich. One of the saddest truths of this story is how influencers sell their souls for things they like and followers.

Monkey Meat: Summer Batch #4 continues with a unique anthology of Junior BA, continuing with another set of riot-worthy, visually arrested stories that blend humor, horror and chewing social critique. It’s bold, weird and brilliant. But it is not for the faint heart or for the traditional mind.

Juni Ba’s comics are dynamic, expressive and rich in visual symbolism

Satire commentary on vacation culture and influencer delusions is razor-inspired

Two original, self-contained stories with incredible emotional depth

Some moments lean against the mixed chaos with clarity, leaving casual readers confused
