Junepurrr’s fan-favorite webtoon series SubZero is now in print with Oni Press, and today The Beat is revealing inside art and exclusive commentary from the author. SubZero Volume 1 will feature episodes 0 through 25 of the webtoon that has garnered more than 375 million reads and over 3 million subscribers since its 2018 debut.
This fantasy series tells the story of Princess Clove, who must marry her greatest enemy to save her people from annihilation. She is the last heir to the Cerulean Dragon clan, which has been fighting a never-ending war with the Crimson Empire for over three centuries. As part of a peace treaty, she is married off to Prince Kyro, heir to the Crimson Dragons, but is surprised to find herself growing attracted to him.
But Clove is hiding something and Kylo knows it, and as tensions rise between them and it seems war may ensue despite the marriage agreement, the situation becomes increasingly dangerous for both of them.
The Beat presents an exclusive preview of SubZero Volume 1, about which creator Junepurrr had this to say:
“Whenever I start a story, I try to draw an interaction between the most important characters to show their chemistry and let the reader know what to expect. I wanted the reader to feel the dangerous presence of the Crimson Dragon standing next to Kylo and surrounding Clove. Often the dragon’s presence is first felt by the characters before it is seen (and of course by us, the audience). The red candle shown in the first panel is a recurring motif that relates to this. It often appears before Kylo appears on screen and is intended to evoke a sense of mystery, passion, or danger. Funnily enough, the candle was my editor’s idea, and it took me an entire day to draw it before I decided it was perfect!”
