IDW is giving children in the 90s something to blow fins out of the water with the new #1 street shark. Writer Stephanie Williams will be at the helm and work with artist Ariel Medel, colorist Valentina Pinto and letter Jeff Eckleberry to bring readers’ incredible new stories from Fission City. Williams was kind enough to chat with Beat about Brand New Street Shark #1, her favorite SeaBite, and how fun it would be to write this new series.

Street Sharks #1 will be on the shelf on September 17th, 2025. Monday, August 11th is the last day that ensures that your local comic store will write you a copy in advance.

Check out the interview below!

Javier Perez: Street Sharks was a massive franchise in the 90s. Have you grown up with that, or are you not used to fandom? Is the book aimed at new readers and old-fashioned fans?

Stephanie Williams: I grew up with street sharks. It was a show my brother and I had religiously watched every Saturday, and we even asked our parents to take us to KB toys and get all the street shark stuff, including those hand dolls.

The new series is aimed at both new readers and old-fashioned fans. While working on the series, my hope is to show new readers what street sharks make and make something unique beyond their appearance, giving old fans something familiar and fresh.

Perez: Your writing is very diverse. It can move from a small emotional story to a big action hero story. What is it like working on street sharks? Do you enjoy it?

Williams: I am extremely grateful for the many opportunities I had to write different stories. No matter how long or genre, I love telling stories. Whatever the story wants, that’s what I’m there to do. It’s like the ultimate imagination exercise. The street shark work was an absolute explosion. I mean it wholeheartedly. It’s a fun thing to replenish me creatively. I can write stories for sharks with my abs and get paid for it. In my wildest dreams, I didn’t think that would be what I would do as an adult.

Perez: Do you have a favorite beach?

Williams: My favorite is the slash. He is the henchman you want to underestimate the most. His overall design is also fun. The confidence he has to wear a purple bodysuit is unparalleled. He was rocking the skim before Kim Kardalsine even made it into an object.

Perez: One thing I find interesting about the show is the constant fish pun on every episode. Do you continue it and do you need to become a marine biologist to continue this bit?

Williams: The constant fish pun is my favorite! I joked on social media that writing street sharks is as close as it is to fulfill one of my childhood dreams of becoming a marine biologist. I’m swimming in a good atmosphere and have whales of time.

Perez: SDCC Ashkan dropped readers in the middle of the action. Are you back to give the origins of street sharks? The Bolton family or doctoral background?

Williams: As far as I know, there is no plan to dive into the origin story of the Bolton Brothers or the Paradigm Doctor. However, that doesn’t mean there is no other way to inject each character with a story of origin.

Perez: Do you feel that street sharks are an eternal force, or do you think their detractors have a point about property damage?

Williams: I think they are eternal power. The good thing is that you may need to stain your hands (fins), but with street sharks it’s just a matter of fixing the asphalt, which is likely to have to be redoed anyway. They bite and fight for everything right. The trade-offs are worth it. Thanks to Dr. Paradigm, one day he is a citizen of a fissilent city.

Perez: What is it like working with artist Ariel Mendel? I loved how vibrant the colours were in #1. It gave me a flashback to watch cartoons from my childhood.

Williams: Ariel is Finnomenal! I love how expressive shark he makes. This is not an easy feat given their huge heads. He makes their movements look very fluid. This is what we love for all the wrestling moves the sharks are running. Pinto is our colorist and she’s off the scale of incredible what she does. Her colours are perfectly combined with Ariel’s art. Our letterer, Eckleberry, brings everything home with SFX to highlight the shark pun.
