This year, IDW Publishing embarked on perhaps its most ambitious undertaking in the Godzilla series with the launch of a new series of shared universe manga titles known as the “Kai-sei Era.” This month saw the release of Starship Godzilla, a new series from writer Chris Gooch and artist Oliver Ono. The series follows a team of space-travelling mercenaries who use their spaceship, the SS Mechagodzilla, to embark on monster-related missions throughout the galaxy.
The Beat is proud to exclusively reveal the preview page for Starship Godzilla #2. The official recruitment information is as follows.
You’ll be left behind in King Ghidorah’s territory!
During the crew’s mission to deliver monster eggs to a mysterious buyer, Starship Godzilla crashes! Trapped on a strange gambling planet, they must win big or steal the parts they need to fly again. Things get even worse when the crew discovers that in order to hit the jackpot in this world, they must provoke King Ghidorah into attacking.
It’s never too late to take a thrill ride through the Open Age universe on Chris Gooch and Oliver Ono’s thrilling ride.
Fans are probably excited to see Ghidorah appear in this issue, but it’s only a brief appearance. As editor Jake Williams explained in an interview with The Beat a few months ago, “Typically, with monsters, even Ghidorah, we’re depicting an encounter with a god. We’re very careful when revealing the full origin. ‘Starship Godzilla’ depicts an encounter with Ghidorah, but it doesn’t show us where Ghidorah has been for the past thousand years.”
In addition to the preview page for Starship Godzilla #2, The Beat can exclusively reveal the movie homage version covers of issue #5 (Barbarella) by Matt Frank and issue #6 (Blade Runner) by Patricio Del Peche. Check it out below, along with previously released movie homage variation covers.
