The Kai-sei era of IDW swung and escaped from the dead zone with two excellent, very different entries in Godzilla, but Godzilla spaceship could be icing, cherry and lightning that proves this is a golden age for Kaiju’s comics. Author Chris Gooch and artist Oliver Ono take what was a Godzilla-themed spaceship and spin it into a fully realized science fiction adventure with high octane ratings. On October 1st, this first issue is pure adrenaline wrapped in dazzling world buildings.
If Cowboy Bebop gets entangled with the chaos of the monster, you’ll have Godzilla spaceship. The energy here is rare. Every scene pops out into something like a cinematic pace where the thrill of discovery, the wit of the sharp crew dynamics, and the smash feels like cutting out paper. The first problem moves like a bullet train, and each sequence is designed to pull you very quickly.
Starship Godzilla #1 begins with a robbery. The two crew members of Starship Godzilla are stealing high value and extremely dangerous things in a Kaiju way. One is Ayan, a sporty young woman with many sparks and kindness. The other is Bitshifty Captain (at least he comes out as the leader) by the name of Rohan. He is all business and likes to yell the name of the ship’s pilot Isla. The opening sequence is exciting and extremely detailed, and is gorgeously rendered so that it can be seen in full page splashes.

From there it’s all gas and no brakes. A relaxed search for monsters on a boat introduces a wonderfully diverse cast. A blue-green Simian bruiser, a capable pilot Isla, and alien friends from Isla have attractive transparent heads. Ono nails both the overstated action and the warm, character-driven beat, balanced grit, humor and unexpected talent.
Also, this first issue quickly makes you bother with these characters. Ayan will certainly become a fan favorite, not only through her kindness, but also through her love for cats and combat abilities. All characters read as if they have a robust backstory and well thought out personality.
The pacing is pure white and fast, but not cluttered by any means, reminiscent of the joys of the Red Line movement and the SW Ayumu of the 90s animated classic. This is not just fun, but it’s also precise and fun, with no wasted panels or filler scenes. Even quiet moments hum with energy, drawing you into a world full of vibrant, vibrant, character-filled world.
At one point, the ship’s hull cracks and Ono feels the air whip sucked out. The perpetrator raises tension and there are moments when the character screams to do the right thing. Between this scene and the elevator fallout, we see there is no wasted paneling, from the character’s reactions and acting to the cats reacting to some news on Aya’s shoulder.
And then there’s the cliffhanger. Shocking without feeling cheap, it opens up the story wide, bigger, bigger, promises reward ahead. Reading the second issue, I’m confident enough to only deepen the world’s buildings, and originality rises on each page. This is a series with legs, teeth and thrusters.
Another exciting element could be when you put this book on it. Godzilla is a traditionally earth-based creature, but here the concept of monsters spreads into space and is expanded into space. The chances are particularly high after quelling the second issue.
