Squadron 42, a single-player game set in the Star Citizen universe, has been delayed until 2026. This is interesting since the developer said the game was “feature complete” last year. The 42nd Squadron was first announced in 2014 and has experienced numerous delays over the past decade.
The reason for the delay is said to be to allow for further polishing. Chris Roberts, head of Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), said at CitizenCon this weekend that he is “confident” the title will be released in 2026. To satisfy its ardent fans, the developer released an hour-long gameplay video recording the beginning, as seen below.
Roberts also told convention attendees that Squadrons 42 will feature “30 to 40 hours of gameplay.” He went on to say that there is still work left to “raise the quality of the game” to the level shown in the gameplay video.
Squadron 42 is a first-person action game featuring on-foot exploration and combat, ship control, and more. It has a fully stacked audio and motion cast, many of which are featured in the gameplay video above. The cast includes Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Andy Serkis, Sophie Wu, and more.
There are also issues with the parent game, Star Citizen. After a hugely successful Kickstarter in 2012, it’s not yet ready for a full release. However, the game has an active alpha community and is still racking up impressive crowdfunding numbers. Overall, CIG has raised more than $729 million for this title over the past 12 years.
