Shortly after launching AI playlists in the US, Spotify is adding new ways to keep your music playing even if you lose your internet connection. A new offline backup feature for iOS and Android automatically creates playlists of your queued and recently played songs for instant listening on the plane or on the go. Offline backups are for premium users only.
This feature complements Spotify’s existing offline mode for users to initiate downloads. In contrast, offline backup playlists do not require manual download. So think of it as less planning and more preparation. (And of course, the standard offline mode still exists.)
Spotify says playlists “evolve” by learning your habits as you continue listening. This also includes tracks that are already cached on your device from normal usage.

When you go offline, your offline backup playlist will automatically appear in your home feed. Once entered, you can filter and sort the songs within to more easily identify artists, genres, or the vibe you’re feeling. Spotify also lets you add playlists to your library for easy access.
To start using this feature, you must turn it on manually. You can find it in the Spotify app settings under (Data storage & offline) or (Storage). Turn on the Offline Listening toggle to enable offline backups.
Offline backup is now available to Spotify Premium subscribers worldwide. (And you must have listened to at least five songs recently.) If you turn Spotify on and offline and it still doesn’t appear, the company recommends checking for updates to the Spotify app.
