Mad Cave continues to expand to licensed titles with two free comic book days. Of the two, I got the chance to review Speed Racer #0. This is a modern update to my beloved anime. Like most of this year’s FCBD titles, Speed Racer #0 includes two stories. David Pepose, David Tinto and Rex Lokus’ first “Welcome To Palm City” focuses on title characters who engage in intense street racing and are violating the law. The second is “Life is Cheap, Race Price”, with Mark Russell, Chris Batista, Sabrina Cintron and Carlos Lopez focusing on Racer X.
“Welcome to Welcome” serves as a set-up for the series and is primarily done from the perspective of two detectives. One new employee and one seasoning. This is a solid approach to embodying the Palm City world, allowing you to take a different kind of approach than the original Speed Racer series. But that means it’s a bit less focused on speed. I hope that future issues will return surrounded by him and his family life, especially as they are illuminated by the bond between him and his brother Splittle.
Artistically, Tint brings a sense of speed to his art. If you like all the crazy technology speed racers that the MACH-5 has at your disposal, you’re in luck. There are tires that can stick to any surface, buzz saws that can get through any obstacle, and even shields that protect them from tear gas. Tint also packs plenty of drift and sharp turns to fill the fast and ferocious film, while Rox fills the pages with shades reminiscent of a summer night in Miami.

Meanwhile, “Life is cheap, Race expensive” works like a spice thriller due to the presence of Racer X. This is raised throughout the issue, as the various captions cost a lot and lead to rather entertaining moments.
However, given X’s background, there is a considerable amount of depressing and hopes that it will be explored in the future installments of the Speed Racer. It is Batista’s artwork that makes the story feel like it can retain its own series. An anime approach is required, filling each panel with a very carefully crafted battle scene that feels on top. The Racer X also gets a redesign and maintains the black and white color scheme of his signature, but has a more cutting-edge racing suit.
Speed Racer #0 is a solid update on classic anime and a solid foundation for building new series. Hopefully, future issues will bring more character development along with adrenaline-filled race.

Pepose gives a neat update to speed up the racer’s myth, adding a fast, ferocious style feel.
Tinto’s Art is an action pack of all kinds.
Russell and Batista make a strong point for the Racer X series story.
There’s a bit of light in the Charitionazaton, but hopefully future issues will be built on it.
