Sony has released the official first look at Until Dawn, the film adaptation of Supermassive’s choose-your-own-adventure horror game. Rather than offering teasers or trailers, the company opted to release a more detailed episode in which the film’s writers and directors explain how their project differs from the game.
As mentioned in Sony’s CES 2025 keynote last week, Until Dawn has a new story and features different characters from the original. Director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Shazam!) said the film “in some ways has the same tone, the same atmosphere, but expands on the universe.”
In the game, the characters’ fates are determined by your story choices, many of which lead to their tragic deaths. Sandberg explained that something similar happens here, and after everything goes to hell, things start over and the characters try again. “Every time they come to life, it feels like we’re entering a new horror genre,” the director added. “If you want to survive, you have to live till dawn.”
This is an interesting attempt at recreating the structure of video games where you can start over if something goes wrong. That said, this premise makes Until Dawn sound a bit like a highly enjoyable Happy Death Day. The protagonist is killed every day, but keeps coming back to life until he discovers the identity of the murderer.
Until Dawn is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 25th. Sony says an official trailer will be released soon. In the meantime, why not check out the remake of the game that released on PS5 and PC in October?
