Fantagraphics recently published its latest graphic novel from Argentine-born cartoonist Sole Otero, who is welcomed by publishers every week as “the rising star of International Comics” in 2024. Otero’s magic, told in a nonlinear narrative structure, is a fascinating story of the witch sisters from the 1700s onwards.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and currently resides in France, Otero is a talented comic artist, child illustrator and textile designer. She has also created several graphic novels, including Poncho Fu, Intensa, her English debut, and Naphthalina (tr. Mothballs).
Mothballs of Otero won the FNAC-Salamandra Graphic Novel Award in 2019 and the Audience Award at the 2023 Angouleme International Comics Festival, writing that “critics highlight the fascinating charm of translated Comics.”
“Sole Otero’s English debut Mothballs featured her powerful storytelling and had a major impact on the international comics landscape,” said editor Conrad Groth. “With magic, she further elevates her craft and demonstrates her extraordinary creativity, talent and literary ambitions. The book is rich in ideas and meanings, and transitions from introspection to creepy and joyous creepy.
This is how Fantagraphics explains magic:
Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1768. It’s a dark, foreshadowing night as the boat arrives from Europe and brings three shadow figures to the coast. Eventually, Maria’s sisters take away a new world in a storm. Over the next few years they have gone down the road from town to town, supporting women in need, and robbing of vengeance against men who have wronged them. The witch sisters have been powerful for centuries, from the 1700s to the present, and have vicious courage to the right.
The sister is told as a broken story through the eyes of those whom the sisters appear in, and magic is a fascinating mystery that stitches together. This graphic novel masterpiece combines strange magic, absurd humor and a fiery undercurrent of women’s rage to tell the heartfelt stories of colonialism, feminism and indigenous folklore. Hand-drawn in a vibrant athletic cartoon style with a vibrant colour palette, this experimental, creepy and hilarious piece guarantees you as one of South America’s most dynamic comic artists and only Otero everywhere.
“The release of Mothballs in English was monumental to me, as I have been a admirer of American comics since my teenage years,” Otero reflected in the press release. “I’ve always dreamed of entering and becoming a part of this vibrant world of graphic novels. Magic challenges me to create mystical, dreamy stories that encapsulate much of my interests in the form of horror fiction.
