First, vinyl is back in fashion and now (*checks notes*) it could be VHS tapes. The last major movie released on VHS was 2006’s “A History of Violence,” but this year’s addition to the Alien series, “Alien: Romulus,” will be released as a limited edition VHS tape on December 3rd, The Verge reported. Director Fede Alvarez announced the news at a viewing in partnership with Beyond Fest.
Alien: Romulus VHS tape celebrates 45th anniversary of Alien, the cultural icon infamous for being “the movie where no one listens to the wise woman and then everyone dies except for the wise woman and her cat” I’m doing it. The tape presents viewers with Alien: Romulus in a 4:3 aspect ratio and is presented in a retro case designed by artist Matt Ferguson.
Alien: Romulus premiered in August and reportedly grossed $350 million worldwide. We’re fans, calling it a “gorgeous and horrifying alien story for a new generation.” We’ll have to wait and see how much VHS sales add to this (seriously, does anyone even have a VHS player anymore?), but December will bring 4K-UHD, DVD, and Blu-ray It will be released simultaneously on Ray. Pricing and quantities for the limited edition VHS tapes have not yet been announced.
