Riot has announced a trading card game (TCG) based on League of Legends. It’s called Project K and it looks like a lot of fun. The cards are expertly drawn and drawn from IP from across the wider LoL universe, including Netflix’s hit Arcane.
Although Project K is not a physical version of the existing digital card game Legends of Runeterra, some characters and locations are taken from that game. According to its creators, it’s something completely new and designed “for everyone who loves card games and loves gathering and connecting with friends around the table.”
To that end, it offers multiple game modes to suit different types of players. Like many trading card games, players can assemble their own decks that encourage specific playstyles. For example, Arcane’s Jinx deck helps create “as much chaos as possible.” That’s what she’s all about.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because Riot teased a card game called Rune Battleground for China earlier this year. It looks like this could be the exact same game based on some of the art accompanying the backs of the cards seen in both trailers.
Well, here’s some bad news. Riot already has publishing partners in China, but not in other parts of the world. We are currently looking for a US-based partner. This may delay the game’s release a bit, but it is expected to be released in China early next year. Despite this issue, the company has said it will begin pre-ordering the game’s esoteric box set in the coming months.
