I grew up watching, admiring, and absolutely dreading The Twilight Zone. By the time I saw the show, the color version had already been updated and rebooted, and while the “new” series didn’t really resonate with me, the older episodes in black and white really stuck with me. To this day, the show still has a lot to say, and says it in a very clever way, but unfortunately still contains a lot of social and political talking points.
Rod Serling’s iconic and timeless show is no stranger to the comics medium, but this latest series (from IDW) is arguably the most faithful yet.
This first issue is about a classic Twilight Zone-esque theme. Wealth, power, greed, and the arrogance that comes with it. To say any more or to provide any synopsis would be verging on spoiler territory. The most effective trips into the Twilight Zone are made when you know nothing about it beforehand.
But it’s safe to say that this story stays very true to the original show and feels incredibly relatable. Billionaires, creepy islands, and secret offshore operations. Perhaps it couldn’t be more timely.
Completely black and white interior and exterior pages, narrated by Rod Serling. It’s all very well done and true to The Twilight Zone, so it’s quite a remarkable feat. Going back to the point of timeliness, another aspect of The Twilight Zone that I’ve talked about is that it’s not only timely, it’s also timeless. Sure, the presentation and technology gets old, but the commentary unfortunately doesn’t change, even though it’s supposed to.
IDW seems to be tapping into something really special here, and with the anthology format adopted with a rotating lineup of creators and stories, this production could be an ongoing run. Rod Serling would be proud.
